Flying Home
My uncle Charles Stephens has passed away. He suffered from a stroke and massive head injury. Charles Stephens was not only my uncle, but also a renowned jazz trombonist who played for many years with the legendary Lionel Hampton. He also played with bandleader George Gee at many jazz clubs in the city including the Supper Club and Swing 46. Charles Stephens was also a loving husband, father, brother, uncle and son. Funeral arrangements have yet to be made, but please keep my family in your thoughts as well as the families of the people who perished due to Hurricane Katrina.

So sorry to hear that Nichelle. Give your family my best wishes.

My condolences to you and your family. I've heard George Gee's great band several times, so I must have heard your Uncle Charles' playing. His passing must be sad not only to your family, but also to his musician friends and fans.

I was very sorry to hear of Charles' passing. As a fellow musician I had the pleasure of working with him several times. He was always sincere and had a wry sense of humor. He will surely be missed in the jazz community. All the best to your family.

I know it is long past, but I just found out tonight, while listening to Archie Shepp's "Cry of My People," and going online to look up the man behind that moving and masterful trombone!
Please accept my belated condolences to you and your family.
Peace be with you.
