Slowly, Surely

Spotted this past weekend:

An assortment of RISD grads and other arty people at Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art Class, run by Molly Crabapple.

The most delicious BLT at Soda's in Prospect Heights (629 Vanderbilt Avenue)

A contestant singing opera at the 3rd Annual Mario Lanza contest in Little Italy.

A big scoop of nocciola (hazelnut) gelato at Ferrara's.

A young guy wearing a snake around his neck in East Harlem.

Pregnancy test sold behind the counter at a 99-cent store.  I didn't even ask how much it costs.

Two turtles and me trying to staying cool on a hot Sunday afternoon.  I think the turtles did a  better job than me.

War

Gawker editors in their infinite wisdom has decided to ban me from commenting on their site simply because they claim that I was "blatantly and pointlessly name-dropping a party that she no doubt wasn't even invited to."

This is not true.  Yeah sure I blatantly name-dropped, but I was invited and I attended the The Long Tail Party that was on Wednesday, July 12 at the Tribeca Cinemas. It was a fun party and I ran into several friends including Dens, Piers and comedian Jordan Carlos.

I am so pissed right now, and the truth is Gawker messed with the wrong chick this morning. This is War!

Actually, let's make cupcakes not war.

Update:  I have every right to name-drop ad nauseum, and people have every right to think it is ridiculous for me to do so. WTF?!  Everyone has a voice! Power to the People! [Imagine me pumping my fists in a cafe while drinking tea right now.]

I totally agree with fellow ex-communicated commenter, T. The blog commenting caste system that Gawker Media has established is messed up, and it flies in the face of the democracy of blogging. Like it or not, GM has become a blogging institution and if you look around you'll see that many of our institutions have already gone pear-shaped.

Headed South

Spiegeltent, originally uploaded by Ania_*.

I am happy to announce that Chicks and Giggles will be a part of Spiegeltent at South Street Seaport at Pier 17.  Spiegeltent will be in New York from August 3 through October 1.

Say What?!

Spiegeltent! Spiegeltent! Spiegeltent!

Spiegeltent is a huge, elaborately decorated tent made of mirrors, cut glass, velvet and brocade, and is essentially a transportable 320-seat concert hall. Ross Mollison, who produced “Slava’s Snowshow” off Broadway, and Vallejo Gantner, the artistic director of Performance Space 122, are bringing one of the tents to New York. This tent, built in Belgium in 1926, is one of the original Spiegeltents.--New York Times

Chicks and Giggles' show will be Monday, August 14 at 10PM. I am so excited! Plus great musicians The Ditty Bops and Las Rubias del Norte will also be performing  in August.  Gothamist's moveable feast of new bands, "Moveable Hype" will also be there in September.

The Line-Up:

Stand-Up From:
Michelle Buteau (Comedy Central's Premium Blend)
Rachel Feinstein (Comedy Central's Premium Blend)
Jess Wood (HBO's Def Comedy Jam)

Music From:
College Humor's Mindy Raf
Free to Be Friends ( 2006 NYC Fringe Festival)

Hosted by: Carolyn Castiglia

My Prickley Pear Lemonade, originally uploaded by taylorkoa22.

I am from the South and I absolutely love lemonade, especially strawberry or watermelon lemonade. Yum!

OMG!  The bomb diggity mash-up album Gnotorious Gnarls Biggie!

The Lascivious Biddies were interviewed in The Villager. They are playing at Mo's on Saturday at 10PM.

Fashion

Good news is contagious.  I love to tell people about the good stuff, and today I had a wonderful time at the lovely and informative Bloggers Who Brunch event that was organized by Lesley of Fashion Tribes and Pamela of Bag Trends. Sponsored by the Glam Network, the brunch started with mouth-watering  watermelon cocktails appropriately called "The Fashion Blogger".  Then me and the brunch attendees feasted on delicious vegetarian food at Counter (East Village Restaurant). My good friend Liza from Culture Kitchen was there and I was introduced to a group of really fun people including the following:

Danielle from Celebrity Babies and her lovely daughter, Anya.

Clare from Sense of Soot. She gave me great information about doing book reviews for  Sci-Fi and Mystery books.

Linda and Marlen from Girlawhirl.

Tia from The Quest For It.

Elke from The Beauty Newsletter.

Vera from I'm Not Obsessed.  She does a lot of contests! Click to win!

The speakers were great. Kathryn from the Budget Fashionista, Meghan from Miss Meghan and the fabulous Najwa Moses from Styleaholics whose fashion sense and personality explodes.  Forget the skinny blondes from Rocketboom, Najwa's video podcast, "The N List", is the bomb!

Cool

Coconut Cupcakes, originally uploaded by the_lovely_cupcake.

So pretty and colorful with gumdrops!

Update: I posted this picture late last night from Flickr and it was supposed to go on Cupcakes Take The Cake. Oops!

Anyway, I figured I can talk about Slashfood, a great food blog that has a lot of good information.  A recent post talks about Icebox Desserts, a book filled with recipes of sweet and cold desserts.

Enjoy the cooler weather today and if you want to be cool, come check Pat Candaras' show tonight at Mo Pitkins.

I'm Alright

Pu Pu Platter, originally uploaded by skettalee.

You may remember Kenny Loggins as the hirsute guy who did the soundtracks for the '80s movies "Footloose" and "Top Gun", but I was watching "Caddyshack" recently and remembered how much I love "I'm Alright".  It's a good song, and I'm playing the next time at the jukebox.

Pu Pu Platter is the most hilarious, most campy, most sexy sketch comedy show ever.  Mike Albo, Sandra Bauleo, Michele Brilliant, John Roberts and Gina Vetro are pupu-tastic!  Check it out August 15 at Mo Pitkin's downstairs. Show is at 10PM, so you can check it after Chicks and Giggles.

Threadless is teaming up with new movie, "Little Miss Sunshine" for a cool design contest. The grand prize includes DVDs, an iPod Nano, most important $1500 in cash. Get to sketching!

Here's another narcissistic web tool- Dandelife. You may blog and you may flickr, but you can go all the way back to the beginning by creating a timeline of your life starting with the day of your miraculous birth using dandelife.  Here's mine and I have only just begun.

Hot! Hot! Hot!

Chicks and Giggles update:

The picture above is of the crowd last week at Chicks and Giggles. The ladies represent!

We have a show tonight and we present Pat Candaras to you on Thursday!

Chicks and Giggles will have a special music show, Comics doing Covers on August 2. It will be in the big room of Mo's.

Chicks and Giggles is proud to be a part of Spiegelworld, the world's most beautiful traveling venue which will reside at South Street Seaport next month. We are doing a show Monday August 14 at 10PM. It will be a mix of comedy and music.

Carolyn, Chicks and Giggles host and co-producer, is featured on Best Week Ever Blog.

Desiree Burch is doing her show, The Sit Down Show, as part of the Midtown Theater Festival. She  will also be reading this Wednesday at RKB's In The Flesh Reading Series.

Adira Amram joined her Dad and performed this past weekend at the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival.

I could tell you more about all the wonderful and exciting things that are going on with the comedians of C&G, but why not just stop by the show tonight and see for yourself!

I Know You Got Soul

Here are some books to look out for in the next couple of weeks.

Poppy Brite has another book featuring gay chefs, Rickey and G-Man, called Soul Kitchen. I have read both Liquor and Prime and I can't wait to read the next one.

Fleshbot editor, erotica writer and podcaster Violet Blue has new book coming out, The Smart Girl's Guide To Porn.

Another cupcake recipe book is on the way.  Crazy about Cupcakes by Krystina Castella will be released in August.

A Fictional History of the United States of America (with Huge Chunks Missing) is a humorous anthology that may not contain much "truthiness". I heard great things about this book from a friend.  It is edited by T. Cooper and Adam Mansbach. David Rees, Sarah Schulman and Neal Pollack contributed.

Ain't It Funny

File this under, "Oh No They Didn't"

Today, I got an email from Stephanie Klein defender/groupie.  Instead of just sending an email, this person went so far as to attach a picture that is alledgely from a Dido concert.  Since it's the back of a woman's head, I don't know if it is true, but I will give this intrepid researcher the benefit of the doubt. Otherwise, they may come back with a census report of every Dido concert with a breakdown of race, ethnicity and gender.

Here's the email and my comments in italics:

I'm truly amazed at how someone who considers themselves a comedian would take offense to an obviously true observation like no black people at a dido concert.

I am not a comedian. I am a comedy producer. I took offense to the comment because it is an ineffective and unnecessary analogy.

see attached. I see the back of the head of a blonde. WTF?!

the line is funny because its true.  period.
Humor is subjective. What one person considers to be funny could be stupid to another. exclamation!

Hate SK for your own insecurities but stick with the fraternity of comedy/writers/observationalists.
Fraternity? Sorority may be more like it since I am a girl.  Yes, I will stick with the comedy/writers/observationalists. Does that mean that Stephanie is not a member? :(

don't be a hater.  it demeans you.
I am a lover not a hater. If you don't know me by now, you will never never know me, oooh.

Girlfriend

Matthew Sweet just asked me to be his "MySpace friend". I feel honored.

I love Spank Rock!

Here's a great idea and a chance to make some cash. Instead of submitting funny one-liners to Overheard in New York, submit to Threadless so it can be a T-shirt slogan.  I have submitted two based on conversations I had heard. Vote for my slogans!

White Flag

File this under: "Oh No She Didn't!"

Remember back when Stephanie Klein was just a mere mortal New York blogger and her first taste of fame was when the  Guardian The Independent syndicated portions of her blog back in July 2004?

Well two years ago, I posted this in response to a blog post of hers.

The Blogoisie.  Interesting people. Tech-savvy people.  Media darlings? Now we're getting press across the pond.  Greek Tragedy was featured as the "Queen of the New York Bloggers". I don't really have a problem with it since there's no competition. I met her a few times and found her to be really nice. However I have a bit of issue with a statement she posted.

"It's like seeing a black person at a Dido concert."

Black people (myself included) like Dido.  I bought her first CD about 3 years ago.  Greek Tragedy, we SO gotta hang out more. I have eclectic music tastes ranging from Dido to Sleater Kinney, Fishbone, Mary J. Blige and The Beautiful South. I am so not asking people to be PC on their blogs, but once it gets put on full blast to a newspaper, a red editing pen might be necessary. [especially the ones from that movie, Secretary]

Anyway, I just finished reading Stephanie Klein's Straight Up and Dirty, and in it she mentions this "Black people at a Dido concert" thing  AGAIN.  Taking in the full context, her comment is  a comparison that seeing redheads is as rare as seeing the aforementioned "BPAADC" anomaly. I totally disagree with the rare redhead thing especially in New York City, since I know at least a half dozen redheads.  I know two Matts, a Diana, a Brandy, a Carla, a Chris, an Alice and probably even more. Maybe it would be rarer to see a redhead at a Dido concert!

About the book, I found it hard to read because each chapter would go back and forth between her time with her husband and her time as a single divorcee.  It seemed like there were two books fused together but not neatly.  I felt that humor was forced and she violated the rule of three and alliteration was overused.

Around The World In A Day

The Long Tail has got to be one of most successful online publicity campaigns this year with Flavorpill and Typepad giving the book a push. Hats off to Chris Anderson, since I think I see "The Long Tail" in my sleep. Tonight I am going to a party for the book, but first I am going to hear Toby Young at Housing Works.

In other news, Chicks and Giggles was super last night! The show was packed and we had a great group of talented performers.  Here's a blurb from writer Felicia Sullivan:

I had the best time EVER last night; the ladies were SO FUNNY!!!
Thanks again for the invite, I’ll definitely be back!

I also stopped by "The Beauty Queens of Comedy" show last night at Rififi, and what was weird that I was recognized by a guy who saw me more than two years ago when I first did WYSIWYG. [I guess that was a memorable performance!]

BTW,  it's super humid.

Thriller

Browsing at Barnes and Noble, I looked at a copy of John James Othmer's The Futurist since I heard him on NPR on Wednesday.  When I picked up the copy, an index card with a handwritten note fell out.  Apparently an author, Andrew Grover, has decided to promote his book by slipping notes in new releases. Is this an example of viral marketing or what?

The card reads:
ANDREW GROVER'S
In Search Of Jason
A Stunning New Suspense Thriller

In Hardcover or Paperback

MY fingers are itching to dial the number  right now so I can my hands on the"thriller".

Just Because

Yesterday, I went to the Met. I finally saw the AngloMania exhibit which was great, but the Kara Walker was closed due to the fact that the Met had less staff.  I really wanted to see Kara Walker's work as I have seen some of her provocative art at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati back in the day. I don't know why the Met would not have adequate staffing on a holiday weekend when there are so many tourists in town.  Anyway, the roof garden was nice and sunny.

Yay! I got to raid my friend's voluminous library of books while housesitting so I have read Mixed by Angela Nissel (writer from the excellent show Scrubs), and now I am reading Haters by Alisa Valdes Rodriguez (Dirty Girls Social Club). Haters is AVR's first Young Adult novel which comes out in October 2006, and it is really good.

Money Changes Everything

Warning: This post is very blogger-incestuous insider stuff. You may want to roll your eyes instead of reading this.  OK, Jesse Oxfeld is out Gawker, and Alex (formerly known as TMFTML) is in. According to reports on Jossip and Fishbowl NY, the reason for the change is because Gawker will shift toward more celebrity gossip content.  Is it a coincidence that Jessica Coen wrote a piece in the New York Times’ Sunday Styles where she literally fellated TMZ, a guerilla gossip website that Gawker has linked to often? [BTW, TMZ is partly owned by AOL and AOL bought Weblogs, Inc last year]  The new direction is understandable given that new celebrity gossip sites are popping up everywhere and are generating so much ad revenue.

Why pick Alex Balk as co-editor?  I like Alex. Alex is both a high-brow and low-brow pop culture master.  In the past, his posts have illuminated readers about music, art and literary criticism. He is not a celebrity blogger, and to his credit, I am pretty sure he doesn’t give a damn about whether Britney and Kevin stay together.  I really miss TMFTML so if TMFTML comes to Gawker, then I will be ecstatic.  However if Gawker becomes just another celebrity gossip blog, then Denton & Co, becomes a follower not a leader.

About the shuttering of the other Gawker media sites Sploid and Screenhead, it is totally understandable.  Overhead costs are increasing as you pay bloggers an actual living wage, and the rent for office space on Crosby St is not cheap.

PS. WWD is hiring someone for the Memo Pad column. I think Jesse Oxfeld would be perfect for the job unless he is already on the phone with Kate Lee pitching a book.

Walk On The Ocean

Happy weekend...

I stopped by Bondi Road (new Aussie bar) last night with a group of friends. The place features surf videos and the decor is very blue.
