What A Fool Believes

uggstore, originally uploaded by candiedyams.

One of the signs that the world is crazy is seeing a line of people waiting outside in line on a rainy Sunday evening to get inside the UGG store in Soho. I thought these boots were over, but for some strange reason they are still very popular. I don't care if Uggs are so comfortable and warm; the boots are still U-G-L-Y to me.

BTW, I am doing karaoke with friends for New Year's Eve, and I plan to sing a Doobie Brothers tune.

Happy New Year!

Party Train

Christmas 002.jpg, originally uploaded by candiedyams.

Christmas in Durham was fun! The long train ride was worth it.
We ate ham, candied yams, broccoli, potato salad, peas and carrots, and dressing.

The day after Christmas, my family and I went to see "The Great Debaters" at Southpoint Mall which has to be the busiest mall in the North Cacalacky. I really enjoyed the film, and it was perfect for holidays. BTW, Cross-X by Joe Miller is a great book about a high school debate team.

Today, we went over to Chapel Hill to have breakfast at the famous Mama Dip's, a popular country soul food place. Mama Dip has a cookbook that you may want to check out.

Also, I ran into comedian Maggie Champagne outside a Kroger. It really seems that I can't go anywhere without running into a chick from Chicks and Giggles. Cool!

Back in New York at the weekend; I'm checking email and the 'nets periodically.

Christmas Wrapping

Black Bean Chili

Twas the Friday before Christmas,
And all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring
Only the fizz in my mouth.

Drinking Alka-Seltzer Plus
Though I prefer champagne,
But I cannot get sick.
Since I'm taking the train.

I made some chili
To feed the cold.
You have nip the "plague" early.
When you're thirtysomething old.

I ran to my phone  to see what was the matter.
It was  only a text from Matt
He loves to chatter.

Then I check my inbox
There's email from Girly
Connecting the dots
Guess I won't get to bed early.

On Dancer, On Prancer, On Donna, On Blitzen.
Let's go to the Ochi's
To see the gays mixing!
Shawn has his show, so I am gonna go.
Hope I get home before the snow.

Dash away, Dash away, Mr. Claus.
I like my men European
But that red suit gives me pause.

Merry Christmas dear readers, dear bloggers and the like
Happy Holiday to all
May the eggnog be spiked!

If This Ain't Love

I am not a music blogger, but I like music and so I am doing a wee bit of a round-up of the best music of 2007.

Alice Russell:  Forget Amy Winehouse,  Alice is the Brit with true grit and soul.

Don McCloskey: Northern Liberties.  I have known Don for six years, and amazed at his versatility. He does folk, hip hop, alt rock, punk and wee bit of musical comedy.

Nicole Willis:  Soul singer that may be touted as 2008's Sharon Jones, but not only can Nicole sing, she also is an artist.

Santogold:  Not just me, but everyone is buzzing about the Santogold. When I heard Santi's song on "Grey's Anatomy" a few weeks ago, I was bursting with pride.  When your friends succeed, it just feels good.

Sharon Jones:  I listen to Sharon and I think of growing up in Birmingham where the local radio station would play a Betty Wright tune after a DeBarge song.  I love the Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings, and I suggest reaching back in her catalog getting all her stuff, not just 100 Days, 100 Nights.

Breakfast at Tiffany's

Montecrisco on the Cheap, originally uploaded by candiedyams.

30 minutes ago: I made a sandwich with ham, Monterey Jack cheese, strawberry preserves on an onion roll.

Next week: Riding the rails down to North Carolina for Christmas.  I have to come up with a Hobo Name.   What about Pearl T. Smiley?

Next month:  Some hibernation, but I will be reading at In The Flesh on January 17.

What About Your Friends?

This post is dedicated to the friends who have hosted holiday soirees  that I have attended recently.

Diana:  Her book, Sock Puppets, is super fun and a great gift for kids and adults.

Victor: Rent a movie that he is in or find out where he is doing comedy live.

Jessica: Her mom's book about political T- shirts, Read My T-shirt for President.

Shari:  If you haven't read Family and Other Accidents yet , you should.

Tom:  If you ever thought about buying a diamond, read The Heartless Stone first.

Matthew:  If you have enjoyed the pictures of me taken by Mr. Powell, then check out his photoblog.

Martha: If you like comics, then check out Comicmix.

Betty Crocker's Bail

Snickerdoodle Cookies, originally uploaded by candiedyams.

Baked:  I made snickerdoodle cookies yesterday for a Christmas party. I used a Betty Crocker mix, but they taste so good because I used unsalted butter and  a wee bit of nutmeg for kicks.

How Deep Is Your Love

Save:  For last minute shopping, check out Retail Me Not for coupon codes.

Vote:  For your favorite rising New York comic on the ECNY Awards site.

Listen:  Coverville's latest podcast is all Bee Gees with Feist doing a cover of "Inside and Out".

Sudden Change

Jessica Delfino's song, "Sudden Change", is animated by Elijah Atkins.  I have Jessica's CD
on my iTunes, so I hear this song at least once a month. :)

I Will Survive

Christmas Colours, originally uploaded by candiedyams.

Recommend: SimpleMicro is the BEST online store for laptop accessories. They have low prices on laptop batteries and ac power adapters. I ordered an ac adapter on Monday afternoon and got by 2PM on Tuesday.

The Sweetest Hangover

Cupcakes:  The pictures I took at the Cupcakes Take The Cake party are up on Flickr.

Chelsea:  BlogChelsea interviews Nancy Weber, the original life-swapper.

Cool:  Nate gives a shout out to Keeping Nickels.

My Favorite Things

Blogging, Emailing, Twittering and the like will be limited since my AC adapter/charger on my Dell laptop is dead, and I have to replace it.  If anyone has a spare one laying around their house let me know.

Went to  two Hanukkah parties and one housewarming party this weekend. Latkes, donuts and vodka!

Fishbowl NY came to the cupcake party, and wrote about it.

Stepping In Her I.Miller Shoes

EAR: What?! There's a pair of earrings just for bloggers?? Yes,  there is a Santa Claus.  Najwa Moses has a new line of bold, colorful earrings  made from 100% leather.  Check her line, Salte, on her Stylaholics website.

FEET: Piperlime wants your shoes!  If you see the big silver pump,  you  can donate gently-used shoes, which will then be given to Soles4Souls.

NOSE:  I got a free sample of Stella McCartney's perfume, Stella, and it's nice!

Girls, Girls, Girls

A week ago, it was my birthday. Here is a picture of some of the lovely and funny friends who came.  Fellow Birthday Girl Carolyn has a fun set of photos on Flickr.

Chicks and Giggles
is tonight.  You Fa-la-la down with laughter as Jess Wood, Becky Ciletti, Rena Zager, Lisa Kaplan, Jen Dziura and  Adrienne Iapalucci bring the jingles and the jokes!

Shining Star

new museum art, originally uploaded by candiedyams.

Bowery:  Last night, I went to the New Museum on Bowery and I love the building, but outside of a few pieces like the one pictured above, I am not so impressed with the art.

Book:  My friend gave me a copy of Blogging Heroes for my birthday.  The book interviews 30 top bloggers, and  from what I read of the book so far, the top bloggers say you have to passionate about something to blog.

Cup Runneth Over:  If Tanya from The O'Debra Twins tells you how disgusting "Two Girls One Cup" is, then I have no interest in seeing it WHATSOVER.

The Woman In Red
