Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

Chicks and Giggles

Chicks and Giggles is roaring into March like lionesses, like queens of the comedy jungle, or something like that. :) First we have a show on March 1 as part of the Black Comedy Experiment. Abbi Crutchfield is the host for our "Foxy Cleopatra Edition" featuring funny Black chicks.
Coincidentally, March 1 is International Women of Color Day. Show at 7PM at the Tank in Tribeca.

Monday March 3 Chicks and Giggles is kicking off Women's Herstory Month at New York University with a show at the Kimmel Center. FREE!  Check out the Facebook event or email me to RSVP at nichelle AT chicksandgiggles.com  Speaking of Facebook, become a Fan of Chicks and Giggles.

Lastly, we are going to Roanoke, Virginia for a show at Roanoke College on March 14. In the meantime, there are shows every Tuesday at Ochi's Lounge at Comix. Come and get your giggle on!

Wrapped Around Your Finger

Doughnuts from Doughnut Plant

There are two super cool shows coming up with some of my favorite women performing:

January 31: Rage of Aquarius IV is a comedy show/birthday party and fundraiser for the Hysterical Festival. Desiree Burch, Pat Candaras, Livia Scott and Miss Saturn are just some of the performers.

Sundays in February: Bridget Everett and Kenny Mellman team up again for a raunchy new show, "Sexercise Live!  A Tribute to the Potty Mouthed and Profound Millie Jackson" at Joe's Pub.

Tonight, there's Chicks and Giggles and I will be performing a wee bit in a sock puppet skit about schmbortion.

Social sandwich eaters, originally uploaded by Giulia1.

Yesterday's Delicious Sandwich Social and Cupcake Picnic was a blast! The weather was absolutely amazing, and there were about 50 people who came to swap sandwiches, be social and eat cupcakes at Prospect  Park.

I made three sandwiches.  Two were with ham, smoked maple gouda, red onion and honey mustard on a roll.  I also made a veggie sandwich with portabello mushroom, smoked maple gouda, red onion, green peppers and honey mustard on roll.

There were a lot of  Chicks and Giggles comedians in attendance including Katina Corrao, Catie Lazarus, Molly Reisner, Giulia Rozzi, Sara Schaefer and Livia Scott.

Thanks to Jon Friedman for coming up with a great idea, my cupcake co-bloggers Allison and Rachel, and the wonderful Peg and Deb from Sugar Sweet Sunshine.

Sugar Walls

Quite possibly the funniest stand-up bit I have seen all year.
I love Wanda Sykes. Thanks to Feministing for showing me the light!

It's Like Chips

I missed the premiere last week at Video Ga-Ga, but here is the video of Carolyn's video, "It's Like Chips".

By the way, Chicks and Giggles is tonight, Tuesday February 27@8PM.

99 Problems

Since I can't afford therapy right now, I decided to seek out help in the form of  HEEB's  Group Therapy.    It was actually a comedy show and it was good times. Pictured above is Allen Salkin, me, Roger Hailes and our "therapist", Peter Hyman. We had a fun 45-minute session that also included musical therapy by Jah Furry and friends including Bill Sims Jr.

We all got to discuss our problems and vent to our "therapist".
One of my problems is that people touch my hair without permission. I know it looks appealing with the kinky texture and curls, but please ask first unless you are my stylist Stacie.   "No toque mi pelo"

UPDATE:  I am attending a press preview of this play, "Split Ends" by Venus Opal Reese on February 4.  As described by the SanFrancisco Weekly,  "Split Ends is a kind of Vagina Monologues about loving your own kinky black hair. A varied and elegant piece about self acceptance.”

This Charming Man

Last night was more  fun than expected, and I got home before midnight. After work I stopped by an art opening in Chelsea, but I was not impressed by the work and left soon after.  I spotted a photographer whose work I do enjoy standing outside when I was walking out and said hello.

Since the weather was so temperate for January, I strolled down to Chelsea Market for something sweet at Eleni's.  I bought cookies instead of cupcakes and browse the shops in Chelsea Market when I ran into another friend who told me that he had a FREE  spare ticket to the Paul F Tompkins show at Comix. It was serendipity and perfect timing,  so I joined TC and his two friends for the 8PM show.  It was great!  Oh Hello's  John Mulaney hosted and I howled during his opening set.  I normally see John do his Oh Hello character, so it was refreshing to see him do straight stand-up.  Then Kristen Schaal performed, and she is quirky comedy. Then the headliner, Paul F. Tompkins told jokes about dental problems, crazy Hollywood non-celebs, and his mom's atheism.  He is a  smart comic  because he knows the importance of good word choice.  I loved the punchline " a red sink would just be a band-aid".  Go see Paul & friends tonight or tomorrow at Comix.

Two:  I am not Jewish.  I am not a boy. However, that didn't stop the guys from HEEB to ask me join their Group Therapy show which will be held at Mo Pitkins on Thursday, January 18.  Allen Salkin, Peter Hyman, Roger Hailes and me. Oy! Yo!

was great last night! Thanks to "The Man" for linking us! Then I stopped by Drop-Off Service where I saw crooners Wade and Signe perform some jazzy-lounge standards.   Lastly, I stopped by the Comix holiday party where there were more comics than you could shake a wand with a "Black Power" fist at. :)

UMOJA!

Girlfight

Neven in a million years would I thought that running all-female comedy show, Chicks and Giggles, would turn me into a nearly raging feminist. I never took a single women's studies class in college, and I have never read  anything by Erica Jong or "Ms. Magazine".   However, I get outraged so often by articles like this one from Christopher Hitchens in the January 2007 of Vanity Fair.  The article  "Why Women Aren't Funny"  has been badly crafted  with some reasearch by Stanford guys and Hitchens' own  stupid opinion.  What he says is totally FALSE.

There are more terrible female comedians than there are terrible male comedians, but there are some impressive ladies out there. Most of them, though, when you come to review the situation, are hefty or dykey or Jewish, or some combo of the three. When Roseanne stands up and tells biker jokes and invites people who don't dig her shtick to suck her dick—know what I am saying? And the Sapphic faction may have its own reasons for wanting what I want—the sweet surrender of female laughter.

Christopher Hitchens! I am calling you out, bitch! Come to Chicks and Giggles one Tuesday. It's free and you can see that women are very funny, and they don't have to be fat,  Lesbians or
Jewish to prove it.  SUCK MY LEFT ONE!

Spiegeltent, originally uploaded by Ania_*.

I am happy to announce that Chicks and Giggles will be a part of Spiegeltent at South Street Seaport at Pier 17.  Spiegeltent will be in New York from August 3 through October 1.

Say What?!

Spiegeltent! Spiegeltent! Spiegeltent!

Spiegeltent is a huge, elaborately decorated tent made of mirrors, cut glass, velvet and brocade, and is essentially a transportable 320-seat concert hall. Ross Mollison, who produced “Slava’s Snowshow” off Broadway, and Vallejo Gantner, the artistic director of Performance Space 122, are bringing one of the tents to New York. This tent, built in Belgium in 1926, is one of the original Spiegeltents.--New York Times

Chicks and Giggles' show will be Monday, August 14 at 10PM. I am so excited! Plus great musicians The Ditty Bops and Las Rubias del Norte will also be performing  in August.  Gothamist's moveable feast of new bands, "Moveable Hype" will also be there in September.

The Line-Up:

Stand-Up From:
Michelle Buteau (Comedy Central's Premium Blend)
Rachel Feinstein (Comedy Central's Premium Blend)
Jess Wood (HBO's Def Comedy Jam)

Music From:
College Humor's Mindy Raf

The Long Tail has got to be one of most successful online publicity campaigns this year with Flavorpill and Typepad giving the book a push. Hats off to Chris Anderson, since I think I see "The Long Tail" in my sleep. Tonight I am going to a party for the book, but first I am going to hear Toby Young at Housing Works.

In other news, Chicks and Giggles was super last night! The show was packed and we had a great group of talented performers.  Here's a blurb from writer Felicia Sullivan:

I had the best time EVER last night; the ladies were SO FUNNY!!!
Thanks again for the invite, I’ll definitely be back!

I also stopped by "The Beauty Queens of Comedy" show last night at Rififi, and what was weird that I was recognized by a guy who saw me more than two years ago when I first did WYSIWYG. [I guess that was a memorable performance!]

BTW,  it's super humid.

Let It Snow

As a showcase for the Aspen Comedy Showcase, there was a comedy show Thursday afternoon at the PIT.  It was called, "Off The Web" and it was hosted by Todd Levin and Bob Powers.  It featured the following performers/bloggers/pranksters.

Chelsea Peretti
Charlie Todd of Improveverywhere
Stephanie Klein
College Humor

Everyone was very funny. I wish I could go to Aspen for the Comedy Festival.  It sounds like the "Sundance of Comedy".

This Charming Man

Richard Pryor passed away on Saturday.  He was a comedy legend. He made so many people laugh. It's so hard to capture the genius of Richard Pryor, but I admired the fact that he did comedy his way.

Nelson George's Obit.
TAN's posthumous interview

Doctor, Doctor

What do I do for a living?  I meet people. Earlier this year, I met Lisa Levy at KGB Bar. She has this show called "Let's Play Doctor". It's a "reality cabaret" show where she is a self-proclaimed therapist and audience members volunteer to sit on the couch onstage and she helps them with their problems.  Lisa Levy and co-host Jim Connelly are assisted by Megan, a lowly assistant.

Last night, there was a free preview of the show at Here Arts Center in Soho.  Before the show, I got a free beer, Brahma, a brazilian beer who is sponsoring Here.  Beer and live theatre go together like apple pie and ice cream.  "Let's Play Doctor" is an interesting concept, but I think it relies heavily on a high energy crowd to elicit the funny.  Luckily, there were stars in the audience who made it fun. Julian Fleischer from Starlight Lounge and special guest star Alton from "The Real World: Vegas" were open, vocal and funny without really trying.  "Let's Play Doctor" will be Fridays at 8PM starting January 13 at the Ace of Clubs (9 Jones St). I recommend bringing a lot of your neurotic friends to the show just to watch them squirm.

By the way, Here's CultureMart 2006 is a festival featuring work by Here Resident Artists and it runs from January 5 through January 22.

Typical Girls

Yesterday, I attended the Ladies Who Launch Live one-day conference.  It was great! I got interviewed by Fox 5 News, but I have no idea if it aired, so if you saw me on TV, please let me know.  I talked about comedy and cupcakes.

I also met Lori Kliman from Cupcakes, a cupcake store in  Vancouver, British Columbia.  She was at the conference and it was great to meet her.  Over at CTTC, we interviewed her a few months ago. Lori told me that she and Heather are expanding with more Cupcakes stores. We agreed that the love of cupcakes is not a fad.  Cupcakes are here to stay!

Everyday is a Winding Road

Yesterday was a whirlwind of activity.  I volunteered for Ladies Who Launch stuffing gift bags. Later, I met up with Brian from The Post Show.  [Check out the latest show!]

Thanks to Blog On, there are a lot of brilliant people in town from the West Coast.  La Bottega at Maritime Hotel is a fabulous place, and it was cool to meet up with BlogHer dynamos Jory and Elisa. Niall and Liza were there, too.  Later my friends and I went downtown to Lolita to meet up with other bloggers, Tony and Amy. [Thanks Tony and Buzznet for the Manhattans!]

Come check out Chicks and Giggles tonight at Mo Pitkins. The show is FREE and it starts at 7:30PM It's a laugh riot!

Chicks was fantastic last night! The line-up was great with a mix of regulars and newbies.  If you read this blog, live in New York and have yet to check out the show, then I implore that you come next week and the week after that.  Soon you will be an addict needing a comedy fix every Tuesday.  It's cheaper that crack or cocaine. Plus, you won't lose your job with H&M by coming to Chicks (unless you were scheduled to close the store that night).

By the way, I am looking to do a collection of essays by Chicks and Giggles performers.  Anyone interested?  Send me stuff.
