She Works Hard For The Money

I look like my mom in this pic, originally uploaded by nichellest.

This weekend I painted my room, and I wore a scarf. My mom used to wear scarfs like this back in the day.

I am sending good wishes to my grandfather Charlie who is my last living grandparent.  He's convalescing after a stroke.

I Miss You

"Thank God for His blessings" is one of my late grandmother's sayings.  I have to remind myself of that after spending the weekend in three airports, waiting on line for six hours, having my return itinerary canceled, going stand-by on four flights and even though I got on the first flight out of New York on Saturday morning, I still missed my grandmother's funeral and arrived in Birmingham about 24 hours later I had originally planned to be there.

It was so very good to see my family, my very big extended family, and  I know that my grandmother would have been happy to see her house so full of family and friends, but would have told them to "go somewhere and sit down".  There's no standing room only at her house.   There is always room for everybody.

Family Reunion

R&R Wedding Day, originally uploaded by candiedyams.

I'm going down to Birmingham on Friday to attend my grandmother's funeral (far right).  My sister sent me this picture of my parents on their wedding day which will be a part of the funeral program. My mom was beaming!  I guess I do look like her.

Why do banks have to be all white and sterile like hospitals?

Speaking of hospitals, my father is having surgery on Wednesday. Please think good thoughts. I am flying down to the ATL for the weekend
to visit the family. I can't wait to see my baby sister who I have not seen in over a year. She's a resident at Duke University but she doesn't live like "Grey's Anatomy".

Family Affair

Denied: Imagine trying to gulp hot coffee minutes before gettting on a plane. People were getting pissed at Laguardia because they could not bring their $4 Starbucks on board. [No Liquids!]

Visited: My grandmother turned eightysomething this weekend and over
twenty family members came to  Birmingham, Alabama to celebrate. [BBQ ribs, mac-n-cheese and pound cake, yum!]

Received:  PICK ME UP,  a reference book by Jeremy Leslie and David Roberts on DK Press.

Drank: Even though I don't drink much soda, I fell in deep like with Sunkist's Cherry Limeade. [it's Kosher, too]

Dear Mama

My Mudear
This is my grandmother who my family calls "Mudear".
[Mudear’s simply a shortened version of the words “Mother Dear”.] She lives in Birmingham, Alabama. I talked to her briefly today, and she's really sick.  Read my story that I read at WYSIWYG in 2004 about her.  Please send your good thoughts!

We Belong Together

Match Day is March 16. Match Day is a totally different kind of March Madness. It is when medical students find out where they are going to do their residency. [Think "Grey's Anatomy".] My youngest sister Rasheeda will be waiting it out on Thursday morning when she finally finds out where she will spend the next couple of years of hell. [Think "ER".]

Please send her good thoughts, because if this blogging/comedy producer/publicist thing doesn't work out for me, then you know I will be mooching off her until I die. Here's the link for the webcast, which will be at 11AM on Thursday.

UPDATE: She's going to DUKE for her residency!

Flying Home

My uncle Charles Stephens has passed away. He suffered from a stroke and massive head injury. Charles Stephens was not only my uncle, but also a renowned jazz trombonist who played for many years with the legendary Lionel Hampton. He also played with bandleader George Gee at many jazz clubs in the city including the Supper Club and Swing 46.  Charles Stephens was also a loving husband, father, brother, uncle and son.  Funeral arrangements have yet to be made, but please keep my family in your thoughts as well as the families of the people who perished due to Hurricane Katrina.
