Mansard Roof

Even though I am not in school or taking a class, I learn something new everyday.

Black Turtlenecks are often worn by cult leaders.

The Root just launched this week, but calling it "The Black Slate" is redundant and wrong.

I am not afraid to be on the bandwagon and say I like Vampire Weekend, but I feel like wearing Sperry  Topsiders when I listen to them.

Everything is next week:  Super Tuesday, Mardi Gras, Fashion Week, Chinese New Year.   I have to vote,  show my tits, look skinny, and celebrate the rat.   Busy!

Love Me In A Special Way

Reading Dirty:  I am reading something sexy and funny tonight at In The Flesh.  I go up early in the lineup, so come early...and often.

No swap:   I am not doing one this weekend.  Check out the clothing swap meetup group to get your swap fix, since it is fun to swap.

Cleaning House:  Everyone is Tumbling.  I have been too in secret for a few months.  It's not different from blogging, so I think the only difference is that is more off the cuff and random.  Plus, you can easily pull quotes from websites.  I am still blogging here, but added my Tumblr below my recent posts.  Then I got to tinkering with the blog,  and I  switched to an one column layout on Nichelle Newsletter,  killed my sidebar and changed the header to green.  There are still links to my other three main blogs, and my archives below so please scroll down!  BTW, if you read this via  RSS reader, then ignore most of what I just wrote and just add my Tumblr feed: http://nichelle.tumblr.com/rss

A Different Corner

Blog: Keeping Nickels is in busy season mode with good information about accounting for freelancers and making business resolutions.

Vote:  Iowa! New Hampshire! New York's primary is February 5, 2008.

Personal:  I will be living austerely in 2008.  I am actually not sure what it all means, but going out less, thrifting, cooking at home are definitely some of the tenets.  See me at Chicks weekly or when I read at In The Flesh.

Tiny Bubbles

Bubbly, originally uploaded by TowerGirl.

Slow:  I am going to slow down the pace. I do resolve  to stay in  two nights per week.

Space:  I want to have a clothing swap on Sunday, January 20 and I need a free public space (office, dance studio, yoga studio) to have it .  This will be my first and LAST swap of the year 2008, so please help!

Showcase: Chicks and Giggles ECNY's showcase is next week, Tuesday, January 8. Come see the funny! The show is listed in this week's Time Out New York.

Happy New Year!
I wish you the best in 2008.

I'm Every Woman

Before the Birthday Partying, originally uploaded by candiedyams.

Birthdays are exhausting for old skool chicks like me. Plus I am going out every night until next Wednesday.  Oh, the insanity!

Free:  The New Museum is opening December 1 and Target is sponsoring 30 Free Hours.  I just ordered a few free tickets and I am going at midnight.

Divalicious:  Neal Medlyn is debuting his new show, NEAL MEDLYN'S POCKET WHITNEY this Sunday at Ruby Streak.  Whitney Houston songs performed by Neal is like Santa giving me crack with Similac.

Artichoke

Sell:  I am trying eCrater (the cheaper, Web 2.0  alternative to eBay) and selling a pair of cowboy boots.

[Artistic]Help Wanted: Read the performer posting for the December 1st art party, and let me know if you're interested.

Eat yourself drunk: Rum Cake is a great dessert for the holiday dinner with your family. Plus, you could card the kids at kid's table and they won't get a slice.

Thanks: Since I wrote this about "Orphan Thanksgiving" a few years ago, I will trot it every year because I can.

Heart of Glass

Killer:  My friends and I went to Lederhosen for dinner last night and ordered a round of Killepitsch shots. Then all of sudden, the Killepitsch girls from Niche Import came to our table with goodie bags with t-shirts and tiny bottles of liquor. Score!

Bikini: I know it is cold, but I got a Facebook message from Dani Kates telling me about her HOT dessert-inspired bikini line, Kandi Swim. Check out the sprinkles!

Glass:  Ok, three makes it worth mentioning. Monday night I saw Ira Glass at the Half King, and at a woman at my table jumped out of her seat to meet him. Then Gawker tells that he is on some "sexy man living" list, and now there's a picture of Ira Glass with author Tayari Jones at the National Book Awards.

The Morning Papers

Funny: Karl Hampe's hilarious web comic, The Regulars, will also be syndicated in The Blade.

Juicy: Stopped by Jewcy's office party and met a blogger from Manolo Men.

Yummy: Save the Date! Cupcakes Take the Cake will have a party celebrating our third anniversary on December 6 in the evening at Beauty Bar. There will a raffle! Champagne goes so well with cupcakes!

November Rain

People: Last night I met a lot of cool people including  Solana from Global Voices, and Author Nancy Weber who gave me a sample of the lip balm she created, Truffle Lips, which is made from the essence of Italian truffle.

Cos: In case you are not like me who has received an email almost everyday about this---Bill Cosby will be at Hue-Man Bookstore this Monday, November 5.

Style:  Here's a book called It's So You where women talk about expressing themselves via their personal style. It's an essay collection edited by Michelle Tea. By the way, anthologies are like the literary version of a sample CD, so check it out.

WKRP In Cincinnati

DSC_8082, originally uploaded by brianvan.

At party one of the three 4th of July rooftop and/or deck parties I attended on Wednesday,  I met this guy named Nate who has on this great T-shirt which was of Cincinnati Transit Map. For all my friends who live in "The Nati" , they would love it since there is no subway system in Cincinnati even though there are tunnels  for it. By the way, "The Nati" is a terrible nickname for a city that is named after a Roman dictator.

I also want to read, Are We Rome by  Cullen Murphy.

Human Nature

Nada:  There is NO Chicks and Giggles tonight, but will return on July 10.

Read:  Wishing Thinking, a blog for coaching creative professionals.  I heard about this blog via Antonio Gould who did a talk last night on microbranding at Etsy Labs.

Pounce:  Pownce is the newest project by Digg founder Kevin Rose. I am waiting for my invite.

Send: Paper cards may be nice but sending an ecards are green and cheap,  Spreading The Love.

New word: Indignant + Ignorance = Indignance

Indignance: Why does Scooter Libby gets away with a commutation while even Paris Hilton does time?

Indignance 2.0: This post by Emily smacks in the face of everything I thought Gawker loved to ridicule. The commenters are like sheep (ew! ewe!) and even Stephanie Klein wrote it better and first.  Read her book. :)

Baby, I've Got Time

Adorable:  Cakes and Babies blog.

Incredible: The line-up tonight at Chicks and Giggles' Anything But Stand Up. Show is at 8PM at Mo Pitkins and it is free!

Accountable:  A potential big client fell through for me at the last minute and now I am looking for someone who needs a  bookkeeper for one or two days/week.   Must NOT be flaky.  I keep nickels, not headaches!

Hot Blooded

Nichelle's recommendations at ThisNext

Above are my latest recommendations on This Next.  I am kinda broke right now, but I finally found a lip gloss (Devilish from Laura Geller) and eyeshadow (Adore from Urban Decay) that I love at Sephora.  I will buy them eventually, but in the meantime I will hit up Sephora for a "live sample".

Reading:  Audacia Ray is reading  from her book,  Naked On The Internet tonight at Bluestockings.  This reading was listed today in the New York Times' UrbanEye daily email which is getting pretty hip.

Music:  The theme  for the inaugural Niche Karaoke show on July 15 will be Disco. Deal with it!

Pride:  Poetry vs Comedy and WYSIWYG shows will be hellafun and hellagay. Can you taste the rainbows?!

It's Good To Be Here

Passion - MDPNY20070517, originally uploaded by mdpNY.

Blogf@cking: This morning, I went to LikeMind this morning and met Kyle Bunch (creator of Blogebrity among other things).  I talked to Lauren of  The Adnostic who was in town from LA.  We met two years ago at BlogHer.

Here are some mentions/press: Jackie Beach came to Chicks and Giggles on May 8 and wrote a recap and review about for Murph Guide.  Web design firm  15 minutes media  (a client of  mine) mentioned me on their company blog, and I LOVE the drawing of me done by the talented Amanda.

Recommendation: Hire Matthew Powell for your photography needs.  He makes you look gorgeous, and check out his photoblog, MDPNY.

An excuse to go to IKEA:  Contact Kevin's Van Service for small moves and delivery.

Groovy Kind Of Love

I thought about writing a really personal post about how wonderful the last four days have been, but I'm too shy to do it here. All I will say is that somebody told me that I have "dreamy eyes" and it is the best compliment I have ever received.

Bub.blicio.us:  Maybe because it is a West Coast thing, but I am just now seeing this site which is like a "Last Night's Party" for Tech+Online Media world.

Neal Medlyn: Sometimes, things are way better the second time. I went to "Neal Medlyn's Coming In The Air Tonight" again at Galapagos on Friday night, and almost died from laughter.  I also got onstage and was serenaded by Neal with the song, "Groovy Kind Of Love".

TOAST:  My friends and I did the Tribeca Open Artist Studio Tour on Saturday focusing on the good art, good cheap white wine and lively discussion of  politics, gentrification and the arts community.

Ivy Bakery:  I stopped by this new bakery in Bay Ridge  (87th and 3rd) on Saturday morning for their grand opening. I met the owner Daniellan Louie and sampled the chocolate cupcakes which are super moist and very yummy! If you don't live in the neighborhood, then you can order cupcakes for delivery. Ivy Bakery will deliver cupcakes FREE in Manhattan (via cupcake blog).

Rehab

It's officially "pre-summer" since I spotted a man on the subway yesterday wearing seersucker pants with a navy grosgrain belt.

I don't even know what a facebox is, but some stranger keeps emailing me to be my friend.

Maracas: Margarita Madness on a Monday is a deadly thing.

In case you read this via RSS feed, you may not know that on my sidebar, I have a countdown to when a certain Italian comes to town.  Tomorrow is the day! Blogging will be light the rest of the week.

Ribbon In The Sky

Ribbon and Trim, originally uploaded by thistletown.

Thinking of Easter, I remember wearing pastel dresses and ribbons in hair. My mother would take me along with to Hancock Fabrics and buy grosgrain  and satin ribbons.

My cousin has a story about her childhood home in Cambridge in the latest issue of 02138

Ken Tanabe  (Loving Day) and Eric Byler  will be speaking at Columbia University at a discussion, "Exploring the Hapa Identity" on Monday, April 9,  8PM at Lerner Hall.

Let The Good Times Roll

So my good friend is helping me get my computer back up and running. It's not fixed yet, hopefully regular blogging will resume by Monday.  Chicks and Giggles rocked last night, and we got great shows coming up so you must come down next Tuesday and every Tuesday.

I bought bologna (baloney is how I pronounce it) today. I ate it on the side with my scrambled eggs with monterey jack cheese and a few slices of a green apple.  Yum! Saturday is the cupcake meet-up, so join us if want cupcakes.

If I keep eating cupcakes, then I may want to start working out with Pump One.

I am teaching a class about bookkeeping at Etsy Labs on April 11, but you don't have to be crafty to sign up. It's open to the public.

Please don't tell me if I am too old to rock pink lace leggings especially since my mom would not let me wear them when they were first popular  20 years ago.

People Are People

I have met some cool people over the past couple of weeks and they have URLs that you may want to check out.

Blogging runs in my family.   From my cousin who is a college student in Atlanta, I hear about efforts to in Georgia to make April Confederate History Month.  WTF?! This is not a joke, but a sad reality.

Hello Dolly

I'm feeling kinda sick and somewhat miserable, but well enough this morning to shoot a few links your way.

I interviewed Zach Klein almost two years ago, before Barry Diller snapped up College Humor.

Julie and Jackie's hilarious, Mommy Time.

This guy Keith Dixon has a new novel, The Art of Losing.

Excellent commentary on  the media discussion of  Barack Obama's  being authentically black . Black people are not monoliths; just because someone is articulate (yeah I said the  "A" word); it doesn't mean we are less Black.

I am working/attending the PSFK conference on March 6. Look for me in a purple shirt.

Interns are not on the mastheads of magazines because they are interns.
