Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin)

Smooches:  If you heart Brooklyn Girls, then party with them this Saturday at Southpaw.

Amped:  I don't go to clubs much, but there's an after party for Bjork/Klaxons/Santogold show next Monday (September 24) and it's Santi's birthday.  Maybe I will brave the foolishness of velvet ropes and bouncers and party. Plus Spank Rock will be there. Yippee!

Ohm: Going to OMMA next Tuesday; will be hanging out at the Exhibitor's Hall picking up swag.

Kill Time: Watch me read poetry on stage. Thanks Angel!

Orange Crush:  It's autumn. I started wearing harvest colors already.

From the Mixed-Up Files of WTF:  Aretha Franklin wants Halle Berry to play her in a biopic. That is like Michael Jordan asking Emmanuel Lewis (Webster) play him in a movie.

Lastly, when did the term "ish" crossover to Gawker? I blame Tionna.

Kids in America

_MG_2811, originally uploaded by alldaybuffet.

Attended: All Day Buffet's Cause For Drinks which  raised nearly $1000 to help kids at underfunded schools in NYC and Ghana get the school supplies they need to excel this coming year.

Dance:  While listening to Pandora since I am tired of my old music, I heard a song by a French band called Poni Hoax.  This link will take you to their MySpace page, so get ready to boogie!

Newsstand:  Stopped by the Mass Appeal art party tonight, and got a copy of the latest issue which has Actress Melonie Diaz on the cover. Plus, there's a little piece on Heron Preston from Naked Communications.

Busy:  More Chicks and Giggles shows to come in September, a clothing swap, a cupcake baking demo in  October and more.

Data:  I almost forgot that my cousin told me last week that Santi White (AKA Santogold) will be opening for The Klaxons and Bjork on September 24 at MSG. WOW!!!

Trunk Fulla Amps

Vote for Lindsay's T-shirt slogan because I want to wear it during the douche days of summer! It was a nice afternoon which included window shopping and a stop in Chelsea to get some delicious cookies from the Treats Truck.  Look for the truck in the Lower East Side Friday evening.  It's perfect fare in case the munchies come early in the evening.

Speaking of cookies, I just got a very belated birthday gift that I love. (My birthday is in November)
In addition to a book, nail polish and cutesy band aids (?), I got SweetHoney DipChocolateBrownSugah.
That Carol's Daughter body butter makes me smell good enough to eat.

Plus, I met Whitney Matheson of Pop Candy tonight. She is super nice.  I also heard about a new documentary that will open this summer, Dr. Bronner's Magic Soapbox.  It will be playing at Cinema Village in a few weeks.

Black Butterfly

Ryan takes wonderful pictures.  After this week of the "Imus Uproar", I really needed to see such beautiful girls!   I took dance (ballet ,modern and African) when I was a little girl and I loved it. Maybe that is why I still love ballet flats and scoop neck tops to this day.

We Are The World

Enough Already!
I have read a lot of blogs lately and there's been a electronic item that has been blogged about so much that it reminds  me of the  iPod  blogging of 2004.  The Wii! Everyone is playing the muthaf@cking Wii.  From ukelele playing chicks to marketing strategists, the Wii is grabbing people from behind their laptops  and making them get up and  move. I have played and it is fun, but people gotta calm down. It is just a game and the last time I got so worked up over a game is when I got "Nintendo thumb" back in the day.  That is probably why I will never be a fast text-messenger.

By the way, if noir is the new black, then what is the new noir?  Think about it...

Girls On Film

party hats, originally uploaded by rkb1.

I think that ABC's "Desperate Housewives" has floundered because it has too many women.  The norm in television, especially with sitcoms,  is that there are  four women.

Examples of this:

  • "Golden Girls"
  • "Designing Women"
  • "Facts of Life"
  • "Living Single"
  • "Girlfriends"
  • and the most notorious "Sex and The City".

The four women are usually portray stock characters

  • the smart/normal one
  • the dumb/naive one
  • the slutty/sexy one
  • the tough/dykey one

However in film, four women is usually reduced to two and maybe there's not enough budget for  four.  However, the recent Jennifer Anniston flick, "Friends With Money" has a quartet. "Waiting To Exhale" and "The Craft" also have four women.  This is only my observation, and I guess there is a reason for it but I know many women who can't be easily pegged into four basic categories.

Happy Halloween! The weekend was a blur of fun parties. I attended two birthday parties, a p@rn-watching party and one Halloween/Housewarming party.  Sunday, I stayed in sitting comatose in front of the TV.  I watched until the year 1985 of Vh1's I Love the 80's in 3D. The most notable thing is that I saw my friend Zero Boy commenting on something about the eighties.  Again I ask, when will I be on vH1?

ADDENDUM: Water finding its own level...and Sarah is a hottie.  Comedy couple "Simmelman" must have a fantastic publicist to get all this press! [thanks, TMFTML]

Message In A Bottle

I love secondhand gossip! Last night, a bartender told me that one of their friends went to see Joan Rivers at The Cutting Room, and they saw Angelina Jolie in th audience.  Apparently, Ms. Jolie's infamous lips were dry and cracked. I have two questions:

Is Joan Rivers slumming by doing a show that is not in Midtown or the West Village?
Is Brad sporting a beard for his next picture?

When I took this picture of lovely and funny comics Vicky and Nikki last week at Chicks and Giggles, it didn't occur to me about their ethnicity, because I was just taking pictures before the show starts.

Later I remembered how I met Anna from Sepia Mutiny last week at BlogHer, and I hope that we can plan a meetup this fall with Southeast Asian, Latino and African American bloggers. [basically anyone blessed with melanin]

By the way, unless you have been living under a rock or totally been on vacation during your entire presidency, then you have heard about the British/Southeast Asian sensation, M.I.A. She performed for yearning masses yesterday afternoon at Central Park's Summerstage, and Sepia Mutiny covered it.

Stop (In the Name Of Love)

It started in Baltimore with a DVD last winter.  Then T-shirts with the words "Stop Snitching" were being sold in Baltimore.  Now  I see the T-shirts being sold on 125th St and being worn by young men in the subway.  I didn't know what was going on, so I googled it.

According to the Baltimore News:

T-shirts with the phrase "Stop Snitching" are  making authorities cringe.
The shirts are hitting stores months after a DVD called "Stop Snitching" began circulating on Baltimore streets. The video warns people they could be killed for cooperating with police.

This is viral marketing, but the message is SO negative and perhaps dangerous. Now people may not report crimes because of a T-shirt!  Crazy! [I wondered if Blottered knows about this]

Major Tom

TOM!!!

Please get well soon.  Your demographic is calling...

Twenty-something men who work in Midtown offices and wear Dockers are worried about you.

Yah Mo B There

This Sunday is the inaugural event for the Brown Blog Series.  Blogging is where it's at.  Come over to the dark side (no pun intended).  Keith Ferrazi's Never Eat Alone praises bloggers.  He also has a blog. On page 100, he says:

The power of shared passion in bringing people together can be see today in the rising trend of blogs.

Ferrazi goes on to say:

When we are truly passionate about something, it's contagious. Our passion draws other people to who we are and what we care about.

I invite everyone who wants to share their passion to come this Sunday.  It's gonna be a stone cold party!

Pop Life

Yay! Another cool event happened tonight uptown.  The National Arts Journalism Program at Columbia presented a fascinating panel discussion, "Noise from Underground: Pop Criticism and Cred in the Era of MP3s, Zines, and Blogs". When I got there, I had to wait on line because I didn't RSVP beforehand. While I waited, I checked out the crowd. There were the Columbia J-school kids, musicians, journalists, assorted hipsters who figured out how to take the 1/9 uptown to 116th St. Finally the panel started around 7PM. With Sasha Frere-Jones from the New Yorker as the moderator, it was a funny, provocative and snarky discussion.  I was surprised at how quickly it became a battle of the MSM vs. the bloggers. Knox Robinson from The Fader expressed the desire for more visceral writing from the print journalists and more coverage of things like southern hip-hop mixtapes and Latino music. Most of the panel agreed that blogging is leading to the "democratization of critical thoughts".  Knox Robinson was also keen to point out that the digital divide still exists. Amy Phillips said that although sexism exists, she hopes that her blogging and clippings will prove that she is fully capable to write about girl bands AND hip hop.  Brandon Wall from Prefix Magazine, Michael Azzerad, Anthony DeCurtis from Tracks and Tunde Adebimpe from TV on the Radio were also on the panel, but the show belonged to Sasha. SFJ was funny, smart, abrasive and loves to hear himself talk.  [Someone get this guy a radio show or even better a podcast]

I totally enjoyed the discussion, and I met Hashim from HipHopBlogs.  The Brown Blog Event is less than 2 weeks away, and Hashim will be there.  Also Jose from Octomoto is back on the scene, and he was handing out flyers promoting his docu-short, "the future beautiful: skewville".

Heartbreak Hotel

US Weekly! People! Stop the f@#kin' presses!!!  Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards are filing for divorce.  She's six months pregnant, and I'm sure people are speculating that Sheen was caught dusting off his old "black book".

[Well at least no one got shot]

The Golden Age

Stopped by two Oscar parties in Harlem last night...

I ate two chili dogs, nachos and Twizzlers at one party that has a big screen TV and TiVo.  Then I ate strawberry and kiwi at the second party where there was wine and an Oscar Pool.

I only mention what I ate because one party was hosted by two gay men, and the other was hosted by two straight women. Can you guess who served the junk food?

Overheard at the parties:

Joan Rivers looks more and more like Amanda Lepore

Renee Zellweger's next role should be Betty Boop

Jake Gyllenhaal is hot!

I won! [the Oscar Pool] Now I have lunch money

Sean Penn's drunk

Don Cheadle should have won

Mickey Rooney's on the death watch

Soul Train

One of the reasons I wanted to go to the Judy Blume reading was because Toure was going to be performing. I was a fan of Toure when I read his book, Portable Promised Land. However, it seems that he is everywhere from magazines like Rolling Store and Suede to TV (VH1, E! and CNBC). Too much Toure can be annoying as I stated back a few months ago. However , maybe I was drinking a bit of haterade, and Toure really wowed the crowd with his reading, so I have reconsidered. He's cool with me!

One Of Us

Doggod

Thanks to Rachel, I got her “plus one” ticket to see "Dog Sees God”, Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead". This play was one of the bright stars of the Fringe Festival and after seeing it last night, I totally agree. “Dog Sees God” is a thinly veiled parody of the Peanuts Gang going through the travails of high school in the vein of “My So Called Life” or “The Breakfast Club”. The play is funny, irreverent and a little sad. I enjoyed it a lot and would see it again. It’s playing now at the SoHo Playhouse 15 VanDam Street. [Van Dam is near 6th avenue and spring St.] I had to give the cab driver directions last night. After the play, we went to the Magician. I drank Coca-Cola, and I sat at the cool table. Sometimes I feel like I am living high school all over again. It was packed and there were some cute blokes. Blogf@#king would be a pain, so I will refrain. You cannot make me!

P.S.
Page Six totally loved Cuomo's "psychic burst" comment to Dick Morris, and it's in the paper today. Remember that you read it here first!

Baby, Baby, Baby

So J. Lo’s preggers and Britney and Demi might be, but is Courtney just a little pregnant or a little insane? C’mon, all the drama that Courtney courts has to be exhausting! Let’s hope she goes to a spa first on her way to rehab again.

Eat It

OK, I wasn't planning to post a single thing about M-K and Ashley, but as I walked by a store today, I saw a toy in the window. It was the Olsen Twins' "Let's Get Styling" Dressing Room. It makes me wonder... If Ashley's wardrobe were full of size 2 couture, then M-K must have worn that elusive and hard-to-find size of (-2). Young girls please take note! Add 2+ (-2) and you get zero. If you are wearing clothes that a doll could wear, then you're just too thin. Carbs are your friends!

The Word Is Out

Last night, I met up with Lustylady to attend the panel event and cocktail reception at the Milk Gallery. I spotted Choire Sicha when I came in, but I was too shy to say hello. The program was titled, “The Importance of Being Out, the Celebration of the Gay Artist". The panel discussion was moderated by Maer Roshan who read verbatim from his notes and asked some silly and somewhat repetitive questions. I am going to assume that he had some intern write the questions, because I don’t want to give him credit for it.

The best thing were the quotes by the panelists who were all sharp and witty.

On why she was on the panel, Chi Chi Valenti said, “I’m representing all the “fag hags!”

Larry Kramer: “Gay people are wonderful!”

Writer and Barney’s window dresser Simon Doonan said that he was “not waiting for a bunch of turds in the Midwest to approve of me.”

On explaining his creative subjects, playwright Doug Wright said, “I was predisposed to provocateurs.”

Bob Morris of the New York Times remarked, “The Style section is the Gay sports pages.” When asked about the proliferation of gay marriage, Morris also stated, “being gay and single is going to be the new smoking.”

Broadway Actress and comedian Lea Delaria stole the show with her comments, and I laughed too much to write them all down, when asked about a "lesbian sensibility" she said that "it had a lot to do with chai tea" and she ended with this funny quote upon asking how she would like to be remembered …"I’d like to be remembered as Mrs. Sigourney Weaver.”

The audience roared with laughter and I got up quickly to get a pina colada, introduce myself to Sarah Schulman and get outta there with a goodie bag. It was a GOOD bag, an Armani Exchange messenger bag with a $5 gift certificate for Daffy's and a miniature bottle of Sylk Cream liquour. I must attend more gays events, since straight people like me don’t get this type of stuff all the time.

Georgia On My Mind

First Reagan, now Ray Charles. Celebrity deaths come in threes, but why did God take Ray Charles from us now? Lord knows we need more SOUL in this country.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Ray Charles (news), who overcame childhood poverty, blindness and heroin addiction to help create soul music and become one of America's most beloved singers, died on Thursday at the age of 73 after a long fight with liver disease, his spokesman said.

I saw Ray Charles perform at the re-opening of Atlanta's Centennial Park back in 1997. He was fantastic! Rest is Peace, Ray. That's what I say!

Every Breath You Take

I am such a geek or a true Gawker stalker that I have a "google news alert" out on Choire Sicha, but I figure if his name is dropped in mainstream news media like the New York Times, then I might be interested. So I just got an email about a New York Times article. Today's article was more about the Nick and Nike blog project that I already read about last week in Gothamist. But the 'kicker' here is the bit that was also much blogged about last week is Choire's falling out with the SoHo House.

Gawker Media sites have distinguished themselves with a tone that says, "I've got no strings." In a post on Thursday, for example, the editor of Gawker reported that he had given up his membership at Soho House, the exclusive Manhattan social club. "They gave me a choice between not covering Soho House on Gawker and remaining a member," wrote the editor, Choire Sicha. "I chose my dignity. Kidding! I mean, I chose trashy gossip."
I say that we should all make to the pearly gates of the SoHo House, so that it will eventually become another British import that doesn't impress us---like Posh and Becks.

My Kind Of Town

I have been to many cities in the good old U. S. of A, but as you can tell, I am a big fan of New York City. I have visited Chicago only once, but it really didn't overwhelm me. But I am noticing a lot of buzz about the Windy City, Chicago. First, it was the Chicagoist from the makers of the Gothamist. Then I hear about Daily Candy Chicago. Now, there’s Time Out Chicago as well. Furthermore, two of my friends are going to be in Chi-Town this weekend. And to make matters worse, I woke up this morning to the sound of Chicago. One of my neighbors was playing a Chicago tape (please don’t there be CDs of that crap) featuring their 80’s hits such as “Hard for Me to Say I Sorry” and “Love Me Tomorrow”. It’s either a crazy sign of the apocalypse or Harlem has got too many Yuppies in the neighborhood!

Ben & Jen

OK, this is a lame attempt at getting in on the Bennifer bandwagon as it rides into the sunset! Those of you who mourn the breakup can comfort yourselves with the following combinations.
Well, you can get your fix from Jennifer Connelly and Ben Kingsley from "The House of Sand and Fog". If you want comedy there's Jennifer Aniston and Ben Stiller from "Along Came Polly". Then for music, make a special CD with songs like "Benny & the Jets" and 867-5309 (Jenny is in the song).
Or if you are like me, you'll just delight in a pint of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream. I could have some Jenny Craig, but I didn't like J.Lo that much anyway!

No Scrubs

While I was out shopping for Christmas gifts, I saw a member of TLC buying presents at Pier 1. Do you think she will "Usher" in the New Year alone?
